Big Data in Food Safety: Trends and Opportunities

Overview:

In recent years there has been the introduction of the term “Big Data” into the food microbiology vocabulary. Big Data is a broad term that essentially refers to complex and large data sets that are too complex to process using commonly available processing power. This webinar will provide the background to Big Data and how the approach has been used to enhance food safety. The examples provided will include genome sequencing, microecology, epidemiology, food safety management, early outbreak detection, spectral analysis and modelling. The implications and opportunities in the Big Data arena will be discussed.

Presenter–Dr. Keith Warriner

Dr. Warriner is currently an Associate Professor within the Department of Food Science at University of Guelph, Canada. Dr. Warriner received his BSc in Food Science from the University of Nottingham, UK and PhD in Microbial Physiology from the University College of Wales Aberystwyth, UK. He later went on to work on biosensors within the University of Manchester, UK and subsequently returned to the University of Nottingham to become a Research Fellow in Food Microbiology. He joined the Faculty of the University of Guelph in 2002.
