Auditing Microbiology Testing Laboratories

(Webinar length:  1h 28m)

Microbiological analysis is a major activity for the food industry - and a very important part of product development and quality assurance. Microbiological analysis is required for a wide variety of reasons - from testing suitability for purpose, through checking shelf-life or authenticity, to assuring compliance. It is important to ensure that the laboratory uses good microbiology laboratory practices in order to get meaningful answers to questions.

Establishing a good in-house microbiology laboratory or selection of the right contract laboratory partner can be a great asset to the organization, or it can open the company to recalls and seizures. Recent news has provided examples of poorly performing contract laboratories that have resulted in significant penalties for the companies that trusted them with testing of products. Quality personnel assigned the task of auditing microbiology testing laboratories may not have the expertise to provide a perspective on this task.  Beyond quality systems there are other aspects of microbiology laboratories that require a closer look through a well trained eye. Though this webinar will not make untrained microbiologists experts in the field, it will provide relevant guidance and training to evaluate microbiology testing laboratories from a risk based perspective.

Areas covered in the webinar:

  • Discussion on FDA’s Guidance on auditing the microbiology laboratory
  • Laboratory facility design and segregation of laboratory operations
  • Sample handling, storage and tracking
  • Media preparation and media handling
  • Microbiological test methods
  • Validation of test procedures
  • Quality Systems procedures
  • Contamination control strategies
